In “Eggs Filled With Honey”, Kailee Viator celebrates nature and life in painted canvases and mixed-media pieces. Subjects include not only the eponymous egg filled with honey, but also iterations of ceramic honeycombs and collaged birdhouses. These works made from craft materials with a fine art handling speak of the symbiotic relationship we have with nature around us; birds make eggs, bees make honey, and we reap the fruits of their labor.
With or without us, these autonomous creatures would continue to make their habitats and pollinate the flowers. The relationship we have come to share with plants and animals is similar to that of parasitic relationships among mankind. It could be one person taking advantage of the kindness or hard work of another.
On a global scale, many countries exploit impoverished cultures for fabrication of products. In this body of work, the habitats of birds and bees are juxtaposed with renderings of their respective commodities. The intimacy in the choice of color palette as well as the scale of these mixed-media works provides the viewer a moment to reflect on these delicate living beings whose purpose is too often taken for granted.
