Getting a tattoo is an exciting experience, but it is important to take proper care of your new tattoo to ensure it heals properly and looks its best. With that said, every person and every skin type are completely different; what may work for one person, may not work for another.
Additionally, every tattoo is different. Listed below are our recommendations, please consult your artist before using any products not mentioned here. We have included some do‘s and don‘ts below as well. If you have any other questions, feel free to email us at kaileeviator@gmail.com.
DO COVER YOUR TATTOO!
Your fresh tattoo will be wrapped in seran wrap at the end of your appointment. You may change out the wrap and clean your tattoo, but do keep it wrapped for the first 24 hours. Wear loose clothing to avoid irritating the new piece. Some clients may prefer to use Saniderm/Second Skin/Derm Shield. These are various brand names for a clear bandage which seals to the client’s skin. These are wonderful for healing tattoos, but many clients may be allergic to the adhesive. Use at your own risk. If using Saniderm, the client may leave the bandage on for up to three days. I do have Derm Shield on hand and will apply it for you if desired.
DO KEEP IT CLEAN!
It is important to keep your new tattoo clean to prevent infection. After getting your tattoo, gently wash it with lukewarm water and mild, unscented soap. Pat it dry with a clean, soft towel. Do not rub or scrub the tattoo.
DO Apply a *Thin* Layer of Tattoo Aftercare Ointment!
After washing your tattoo, apply a thin layer of tattoo aftercare ointment. This will help keep the tattoo moisturized and prevent it from drying out. Do not apply too much ointment, as this can cause the tattoo to become too moist and increase the risk of infection, as well as clog the pores of the skin surrounding the tattoo. Apply aftercare if the tattoo appears dry, or is overly itchy. Acceptable products may include Aquaphor, Lubriderm, Tattoo Goo, Hustle Butter, Mad Rabbit, Crybaby... The list goes on, but again, be aware that every client’s skin is different. One client may praise Aquaphor, one may be allergic to the petroleum in the product, while another prefers a thinner lotion. Whatever you are using, please stick with the same product throughout the healing process, and make sure the product is not fragranced.
DO Be Patient!
It can take several weeks for a tattoo to heal completely. During this time, it is important to be patient and follow the above steps to ensure that your tattoo heals properly and looks its best. A fresh tattoo will feel similar to a sunburn.
DO NOT EXPOSE A FRESH TATTOO TO THE SUN OR GO SWIMMING!
It is important to avoid sun exposure for the first few weeks after getting a tattoo. The sun’s ultraviolet rays can cause the tattoo to fade and may even cause it to become discolored. You may NOT go swimming with a fresh tattoo. The same applies to hot tubs, pools, and soaking in the bath tub. Showering is fine, but be sure not to let shampoo or body wash sit on your tattoo.
DO NOT PICK OR SCRATCH AT YOUR HEALING TATTOO!
